  2. The debate idea sounds interesting. How would everything be set up though? Would just anyone with input participate? I also think it would be a good idea on whatever topic we choose to maybe interview or take polls to get the ideas of other students on campus. I think it would be more appealing and interesting if we had our peers thoughts and ideas included. Maybe even some type of social experiment. Just throwing out ideas.

    Beauty Myth: 4/25
    Our group project about the media and the beauty myth will include issues and details based on how girls are perceived in our society. By using the following media methods, television, magazines, internet, and music is how we will tie in our topic to display the effects of the beauty myth. We are using Naomi Wolf’s beauty myth context to point out the meaning of the term beauty myth and how women perceive themselves to be. The quote that Wolf states “modern beauty is based on a mythical perception of “beauty” – a socially constructed set of ideas about how female bodies should appear and behave- that has become more rigid and restrictive even as women have gained political and economic ground” we will relate and discuss to our topic. We will also tie in men’s perspective on how they think women should present themselves. We will also mention reasoning’s and examples from the black beauty myth as well as compare and contrast from Naomi Wolf’s Beauty Myth.
    In more detail to our topic we will discuss how fashion trends and eating disorders have effected women’ self-esteem and has brought about many judgements from people in society. The black beauty myth also states how products and accessories are not regularly available. From the article “I see the same Ho” by T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting , we will base our idea from the following quote, “ And the desire to be desirable seems especially costly and laborious for young black women”. The hip hop videos have an effect on black women that causes them to believe that what they cannot be they now have to buy. We are going to relate the beauty myth in general to hip hop and videos and how it overtakes women’s role in the society.
    Our presentation will based off of video and personal interviews around campus. We will use other peoples thoughts opinions to discuss how they feel about the beauty myth and media. Our video will for the most part will be displayed as this;
     Group members will state some facts about the definition of the beauty myth.
     We will base our points off the articles and how it relates to our topic.
     We will also display in our video different types of media such as magazines, hip hop songs, television, and internet.
     Our interviews from people’s opinions will also be included.
     Emanuel will be in charge of video taping because he has experience.
     Claire will come up with all the questions for the interviews.
     Evan will actually be the one doing the interviews.
     Nicole will be in charge of getting the songs and videos.
     Skye will be in charge of getting the advertisements.
     Zach and Ashley will be searching for different people to interview.
    Our contributions to the class and society will be bringing awareness to people about the explanation and harmful effects among women in society. With this being said we hope they will better understand the topic of insecurities of women and how women should not conform to the social norms of beauty, instead be who you want to be. We would like to finalize our project on Monday April 18th.

  4. Great project idea! Well thought out. You might think about showing your interviewees some clips from Killing Us Softly or Dreamworlds and discuss their thoughts, perspectives. But all in all, great ideas, just nail down some consistent questions if you move to various sites on campus so you can evaluate any changes/differences. Nice work, good luck!
