Extra Credit Blog

Due Sat 3/26 by noon
In 2-3 paragraphs, please reflect upon the following article and place it in conversation with this week’s readings on globalization and women’s labor.  What is the importance of labor unions here and abroad?  Why are they particularly important for women laborers?  How do union concerns here in the United States relate to union concerns in the “developing world”? (hint: consider free trade agreements).  Can you imagine unions being a point of transnational solidarity for workers?  Why?

  1. I feel that labor unions are extremely important. They remind us that everyone should have the right to not only work, but to receive the same privileges as anyone else. Those people in unions here and abroad are doing what they can to better their community, their cities and want to help families in need. Labor unions are important because they secure wages, benefits, and security for their retirement. Labor unions are particularly important for women because women are, even today, oppressed in the working environment.
Union concerns in the United States relate to union concerns in the “developing world” in that in order to have free trade we must be on the same page, women and men. Women deserve just as many things men do. If men and women could work together to be in equality free trade would be much easier to work with. Yes, I can imagine unions being a point of transnational solidarity for workers because if everyone were to be a part of a union thing may go much smoother.

  3. Labor unions are definitely important in todays society because they help to secure all the benefits of a job no matter if your a man or woman or a different race. Labor unions not only make sure laborers all receive equal wages and benefits but they also bring together communities near and far. Women today join labor unions because they feel that in some jobs, they may be the minority or feel oppressed for being a female doing their job. The women's movement in the sixties proves that women deserve to be on the same level as everyone that they work with. If this process of women joining unions took place, it would not only help them in general but it would give communities a opportunity to rise up and become stronger.
I think that the Union concerns in the United States relate to those in the developing world because everyone agrees that if men and women has no controversy in jobs, then free trade would be able to occur more efficiently. If women joined labor unions, they would also be able to solve grievances between men and women. Women with jobs in schools, as nurses or assistants, or in social work are the people who hold our communities together. If they don't feel that they are being treated properly or equally, then we have not just one problem. Wisconsin's governor, Walker, needs the listen to the words of advice of Elanor Roosevelt, even though she is a woman, because at this point, men and women who work as hard as each other deserve to be treated the same in at least some proper aspects. Yes I can imagine unions being a point of transnational solidarity for workers because with unions, women can count on their boss's to provide them with the same future security and care as they do the rest of the employees, man or woman.

  4. I feel like labor unions are very important. Not just for women but for all people. Labor unions are great because they give there members peace of mind in a very unsure world, by giving them security and something to always fall back on. Without labor union today everything in the job world would be screwed up because everything would be controlled by large companies.

Labor unions are most important to women because they give women equal opportunity to work beside their counterpart. Unions in the US are related to developing worlds because they all have one goals which is to make sure all women have security and are treated how they are suppose to be treated. Yes I can you imagine unions being a point of transnational solidarity for workers because everyone is not always treated fairly and that will cut down on the mistreatment of workers
